"There is nothing like a perfect economy"
Do we all agree with this phrase? The economic system has countless holes here and there, so if we are intelligent enough to recognize them, why can't we just work to cover them up?
The truth is: it's complicated. In fact, none of the issues regarding the economy now are a subject of black and white; it's not an either or; it's CONTROVERSIAL. It's the controversy that comes along every decision, because in contrast to what Charles Wheelan states, every trade off does not benefit both parties equaly, especially in a world where most seek desperately to be better off (sadly, without a finish line in mind). No one can say he or she knows how to achieve Utopia, because a perfect society is not anything close to wanting more, but better. |
It's not my point to make the economy sound as a lost case--it's not! We are not stuck that deep... yet. These holes are manageable and we should all see them: room for improvement. So, as an academy we've decided to undertake a new challenge with a question that rose the first day we came in from summer vacations:
How can we positively impact our local economy and government through film?
Peru, as a LEDC country, faces concerns at all levels and their situation is no joke. This project is the perfect opportunity to create something with value that will aim to educate and have an impact on society.
There's something about film that if produced genuinely your point can be deilvered and proven in an effective way to different audiences. Just think about "The Cove", or "The Inside Job" and their impact as soon as these where released; these opened people's eyes. Now, it was my time to think about what I wanted to produce: Who did I want to target? What topic in my economy do I want to discover? Or what's more: what hole do I want to cover? |
As the IA we separated for 20 minutes across the FDR campus and asked questions: not only a great practice for our future interviews, but an effective way to know our working ground. We interviewed as many people as we could on their picture of the economy, what they knew, their personal issues etc. From this, we created a list that seemed interminable. Thankfully, I can say that I might be looking at my future focus area, given that it captured me in a blink:
What does it mean to be a women entrepreneur in Lima, and how has gender discrimination evolved through the years both in high & low classes in the society. The project will endeavor creating contacts, meeting woman entrepreneurs, finding stats, being a small detective in the search for the gold information; the one that people need to hear; the information that will make a difference. Like in every creative challenge, being adaptable is key so I cannot say that I am 100% certain of this topic but it's definetely one that inspires me: Ideas are already popping up and my vision is coming clearer, it's time to start digging into my research. |
