there is nothing like a perfect economy
The world and the way it runs depends on 100% on human behaviors and their choices-- as we are all different and we are all HUMANS it's an imperfect science, it is not accurate and you cannot test or prove anything about it in a laboratory. If something stood out today in the introduction to ECONOMICS is that though it might sound as a "tedious" mathematical subject, it can be understood without using any graphs or charts because it is based on concepts. |
why is this not necessarily the case?
In a year in china for example, they can build a huge mall but that mall becomes a ghost town and no one works there. Still, even though this doesn't make the country better, the GDP increases because they have more buildings thus greater development. This concept was surprising because this meant that if in a poor country like Peru the criminal rate increases and they have to build five jails in a year that would increase the GDP much more than building two new schools; something much beneficial for everyone. |
Did you know that in the US they make women health care more expensive so fewer women can afford it yet it still gives more money to the country?
After a strong discussion we proceeded into watching THE COVE a documentary that illustrates the dolphin slaughter in Japan and how the government tries to hide it. It tells the story of the man who started it all-- who captured flipper and started the TV series-- and realized one day that his goal was to put an end to this million dollar industry. He does it with passion, risks his life and uses espionage equipment to show the world what truly is going on in the COVE. How many times the "whale" meat sold on markets was actually dolphin meat because it was cheaper and the citizens had no idea that they where consuming it. |
The lies, the cover-ups, the corruption and manipulative moves the government and the representatives do in order to continue this practice are frightening. I learned that sometimes what you see as a flourishing economy is a devious market.
It's clear: by mixing a variety of resources that deal with real-world situations the subject comes to life. The story of better YouTube video, the cove documentary and a read like Naked Economics are some materials out there that I can recommend to any one. | |
